“Canada is a middle power caught in the middle of geopolitical battles between China, the European Union and the United States.”
Patrick Leblond
Our Dependance on america
Let’s face it
Sovereignty is about strength and defense—and both primarily come from a strong economy. And economy, in turn, begins with “low-hanging fruits.” Canada is not merely near America; we are adjacent to it. This geographical reality makes us natural trading partners. Culturally too, we are closer to America than far from it. That proximity offers an opportunity for friendship.
But America is for America, and Canada is for Canada. Friendship does not require marriage. Because, as we’ve seen, when someone like Trump becomes president—and considering the immense executive power vested in the U.S. presidency—we must always be alert to “America First” actions that could harm our national interests.
And then there’s the quiet notion, lurking in the background of the American mind: “Let’s take Canada.” America is a friend, yes—but not one we can afford to be naive about. With this truth in mind, we must carefully define who we are on the global stage. Assertiveness may spook the Americans. Meekness may tempt them. This will be Canada’s burden—forever.

GOAL: ECONOMIC RESILENCE
Canada values its trade and cultural ties with America, our natural partner. Yet, their unpredictability—shifting policies or priorities—demands caution. Mark Carney dismisses these ties; Pierre Poilievre reacts rather than plans; Jagmeet Singh risks confrontation. Our goal is not economic independence but resilience, ensuring stability despite American changes. To achieve this, we propose:
Diversify Trade
Easier said than done—because, once again, America is watching. Everything we do falls under their microscope. Canadians should be wary of that.
Secure Critical Supply Chains
The first step is to define what’s essential. An avocado isn’t critical—but Children’s Tylenol is. We must distinguish needs from wants.
maximize what we can do at home
This is well within our reach. The real barriers are political—at every level. What we need is a strong federal party that knows how to play all kinds of ball with everyone.
have a better control of our economy
Conservatives tear down controls. Liberals pile them on. But what we actually need are precise, optimized controls we can use to steer the economy instantly, when needed.
